KAUA’I MOKIHANA FESTIVAL
KAUA’I COMPOSER’S CONTEST AND CONCERT
RULES AND REGULATIONS
The competition is open exclusively to Kaua’i composers.
Each entry shall be wholly original and shall not infringe upon any copyrights or any other rights of any third party. By entering the contest, each entrant shall release, indemnify, and hold harmless all sponsors and co-sponsors from any claim relating to the ownership of the submitted materials which include, but are not limited to, the musical score, lyrics, and song title.
No musical composition or lyrics may be entered that has been released for commercial sale in any medium prior to June 30 of the current festival year.
The entrant shall be the author of the song and shall not have granted any copyrights of the song to any other person.
The sponsors and co-sponsors assume no responsibility for loss or damage to any submitted material. NO SUBMITTED MATERIALS WILL BE RETURNED UNLESS REQUESTED.
All entries must be postmarked to Mālie Foundation, P.O. Box 13, Kapa`a, HI 96746, ATTN: Nathan Kalama, no later than the first Friday in August of the year of the current festival, before 5:00 P.M. The sponsors and co-sponsors reserve the right to extend this date in the event of interruption of postal services, national emergencies, or acts of God.
Entrants shall be pre-screened by a qualified panel of judges. Finalists have an opportunity to perform their song at a concert for the paying public during this year’s scheduled concert before a panel of qualified judges. You must be present to win.
All
decisions of the judges shall be final and binding upon all
sponsors, co-sponsors, and all entrants.
THERE ARE SIX
CATEGORIES:
HAWAIIAN – Lyrics in Hawaiian with translation provided.
CONTEMPORARY HAWAIIAN – English lyrics about Hawai’i.
OPEN – Jawaiian, blues, gospel, rock and roll, jazz, etc… WITH LYRICS
PROFESSIONAL – If the COMPOSER has competed any record, tape, disc, etc. for sale to the general public, and/or if the COMPOSER is presently playing a steady gig, then he or she must enter this category. They can enter any type of song with lyrics included.
YOUTH –
ages 14 through 20 years of age.
SONGS WILL BE JUDGED ON MERIT – NOT ON PERFORMANCE during the pre-selection of finalists. The top award in each category will go to the COMPOSER (S). The NA PO’E AWARD (PEOPLE’S CHOICE) is based on the highest votes received from the audience. The PERFORMERS AWARD is based on the live presentation at the concert by the best act.
THERE WILL BE NO MORE THAN THREE (3) FINALISTS IN EACH CATEGORY.
An entrance fee of $10.00 per song is required.
Enter as many songs as you like. However, each song must be on it’s own cassette/CD and accompanied by a separate entry form, lyric sheet (with translation if applicable), and fee. ONLY THE SONG TITLE AND COMPOSERS NAME SHOULD APPEAR ON THE CASSETTE/CD.
All entrants agree to release their song(s) for airplay/broadcast in connection with the promotion of the contest and concert. NOTE: if chosen as a finalist your submitted tape will be played/broadcast over the radio. We suggest you record in a studio.
NO DANCING, SET PROPS, OR ANYTHING ELSE IS PERMITTED AT ALL DURING THE LIVE PERFORMANCE BY PERFORMERS OR OTHERS FOR THE ENHANCEMENT OF THEIR SONG ENTRY. IF DONE, YOU WILL BR IMMEDIATELY DISQUALIFIED!
THERE WILL BE NO REHEARSAL TIME PRIOR TO THE CONCERT.
You must be present at the concert and awards ceremony to win.
Judging for the finalists at the concert will be based on the following criteria and point system.
POINT SYSTEM:
PRESENTATION: Appearance 5 points; Showmanship 5 points; Stage presentation 5 points; Total Performance 5 points. Possible TOTAL: 20 points.
MUSICAL FORM: Intonation 5 points; Harmony 5 points; Balance/Blend 5 points; Instrumentation 5 points; Lyrical Content 5 points. Possible TOTAL: 25 points
MUSICIANSHIP: Dynamics 5 points; Expression 5 points; Flow/Mood of song 5 points. Possible TOTAL: 15 points.
COMMERCIAL POTENTIAL: 15 points.
GRAND TOTAL (POSSIBLE POINTS): 75 points
