FIRST ANNUAL

MIZ KAUA`I TITA PAGEANT

&
THIRD ANNUAL

HAPA HAOLE HULA COMPETITION

It could have been the conch-shell blowing or the lobster with black bean garlic sauce or just the right amount of talent, grace and attitude. Judged as the winner with the most “titaness”, Pa`ula Chandler is the first “Miz Kaua`i Tita”.
Six contestants with strong personality competed for the title Friday evening before a sold-out crowd at the Radisson Kaua`i Beach Resort.
Rumor's of a fight breaking out among the competitors are false, though the clumps of hair found later on the floor were said to be from the master of ceremonies' blond wig. Ed Ka`ahea, also known as Tita Blur, performed in costume and kept the audience laughing, as he and event coordinator Ka'iulani Edens-Huff spared back and forth with jokes and jibes.
“This event is to honor all the strong women on Kaua`i,” said Edens-Huff. These are women you don't want to mess with; who are passionate friends, and make life wonderful for those they love. And don't tell me hurry up tonight or you can meet me outside.”
Talented first runner-up, Sandi Swift, can actually do a “shaka” with her toes. The pupu category was a strong point for third place Missy Nu`uhiwa, as she presented soft-shelled crab and fresh ono prepared in mouth-watering ways. In forth place, the lovely Janice Vicente can do small engine repair and start a chain saw fast, so “watch your back.” Ipo Kahananui won the People's Choice award, and demonstrated that a tita can sing beautifully. Though 16-year old Camae Trinque had a 4.0 grade average and could dance on stilts, but as a member of the audience said, “lacked tita ripeness and is just 30 years too early.”
“I don't think our visitors know how many 'titas' are working behind the scenes to make their visit a good one,” said Huff. “We already have women signed up to for next year's pageant.” Call 652-4780 for 2005 applications.
The event is part of the Hapa Haole Hula May Day event, and is a fundraiser for the Kaua`i Mokihana Festival and the Hawai`i Hotel and Visitor Industry Charity Walk, set for Saturday May 15.
Event sponsored in part by the Hawai`i Tourism Authority and the County of Kaua`i Economic Development Office.
