Applications Available for 2005 Kaua`i
Composer's Contest and Concert
All composers and musicians are encouraged to participate in the 21st Annual Kaua'i Composers Contest and Concert. Great prizes and rec ognition are the rewards for the composers. The contest is open to Kaua'i County residents only.
Encouraging composers to create songs in the Hawaiian language is exactly the goal of this Kaua`i Mokihana Festival event,&rdquo founder Nathan Kalama said. "The songs our island's composers play at this competition will become the classic Hawaiian songs decades from now. Hawaiian music is evolving and growing."o
The contest and concert dedicated to promoting new music is coordinated each year as part of the Kaua`i Mokihana Festival. The popular event will be held at Kaua`i Community College Performing Arts Center Monday, September 19, 2005. The deadline to submit an entry is Friday, August 5, 2005. Applications are on-line at http://mokihana.kauai.net or write to Kauai Mokihana Festival, PO Box 13, Kapaa, HI 96746, attention Nathan Kalama.
Last year, composer Kale Kaui won first place Hawaiian category with Lei Papahi Henoheno. Kale Kaui tied the Commercial Potential Award with Joe Adric. Adric won first place Contemporary Hawaiian category.
Compositions in all categories are encouraged. A nominal entry fee of $10 per entry is required. Songs may be submitted in the following categories:
